The effect of endophytic fungi on the formation of resistance in Krascheninnikovia ceratoides Gueldenst. to the drought
Abstract
Background. Currently, the influence of these endophytic fungi, including arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), on the formation of drought resistance in Krascheninnikovia ceratoides Gueldenst. in Southern Russia remains unexplored.
Purpose. The aim was to study the effects of representatives of the endophytic fungi Fusarium oxysporum var. redolens and Simplicillium obsclavatum, as well as AMF Rhizophagus intradices (Błaszk., Wubet, Renker & Buscot) C. Walker & A. Schüsler and Funneliformis mosseae (T.H. Nicolson & Gerd.) C. Walker & A. Schuessler on the formation of resistance in K. ceratoides to drought.
Materials and methods. The studies were conducted under controlled laboratory experimental conditions (n=80). The object of the study is two–year-old K. ceratoides seedlings. The experimental scheme included four experimental groups: 1. Control; 2. F. oxysporum var. redolens; 3. S. Obsclavatum; 4. Glomeraceae. In each group, the reaction from irrigation and drought was determined. The content of photosynthetic pigments and metabolites in K. ceratoides leaves was analyzed using a Dualex Scientific plant analyzer. The assessment of the presence and degree of colonization of the root system by endophytic mycorrhiza was carried out using the Etching method.
Results. The state of life in terms of morphological parameters and photosynthetic parameters of K. ceratoides varied by experimental groups and by observation periods. A better vital condition of K. ceratoides was noted in variants with inoculation of S. oblavatum and Glomeraceae during drought by the end of the experiment compared with F. oxysporum var. redolens. The total chlorophyll content in the leaves of K. ceratoides in the S. Oblavatum and Glomeracea variants increases after two weeks of the experiment during drought, but decreased by the end of the experiment. The highest content of flavonoids and anthocyanins in the leaves of K. ceratoides in drought conditions was observed by the end of the experiment after inoculation with F. oxysporum var. redolens. The dynamics of mycorization in all plants inoculated with fungi demonstrated a consistent increase in indicators between the beginning and the end of the experiment. The differences between the fungal species were expressed mainly in the abundance of arbuscules in the root system of K. ceratoides. The most noticeable increase in chlorophyll content, improvement in morphological condition, and active leaf growth with moisture deficiency were observed in plants with S. oblavatum and Glomeraceae.
