Abstract

Background. Lignoacids (LA) are a by-products of the catalytic oxidation of plant raw materials into vanillin and cellulose. Their composition is similar humic acids, and they may possess plant growth-promoting activity. Therefore, study of the LA growth-promoting properties for agricultural crops is a relevant area.

The purpose is investigate the influence of the oxidation conditions of various plant raw materials and the radish germination conditions for the growth-promoting properties of the isolated LA.

Materials and methods. The growth-promoting activity of LAs isolated from various substrates was estimated using radish seeds (Raphanus sativus var. radicula) in the laboratory, with germination on filter paper. The germination energy, germination rate, radish root and hypocotyl lengths, and both the average and maximum growth-promoting effect (GPE) were estimated.

Results. All isolated LA has a significant GPE, the ratio of root lengths—comparing those grown under LA treatment versus control conditions on days 7–8—yielded a GPE value of 1.3–2.0. The GPE increased in the following order: GPE(aspen LA) << GPE(flax shive LA) ≈ GPE(wheat straw LA) ≈ GPE(Pine LA). The growth-promoting effect observed at optimal LA concentrations is partially masked by the inhibitory effect associated with high LA concentrations.
