The use of phytoestrogens in the menopausal period

Keywords: menopause, correction, treatment, alternative, phytoestrogens, literature review

Abstract

Background. Menopausal syndrome includes various vasomotor, metabolic-endocrine and neuropsychiatric clinical manifestations in women that occur against the background of the fading or sudden loss of ovarian hormonal function and are one of the most common gynecological problems during menopause. This review article discusses the correction of menopausal symptoms in patients with absolute or relative contraindications to traditional menopausal hormone therapy or its individual components using medicinal plants containing phytoestrogens. Phytoestrogens are natural non-steroidal phenolic plant preparations that are close in structure and functions to estrogens, are able to imitate the functions of endogenous estrogens by binding to estrogen receptors, and have antimicrobial, anticarcinogenic and anti-inflammatory properties. The main mechanisms and effects of medicinal plants used to treat and correct menopausal syndrome are studied. Phytoestrogens are effectively used to correct climacteric syndrome and can be recommended as alternative methods of treating menopause.

According to Russian and foreign scientists, phytoestrogens are effective and safe herbal preparations that act as an alternative to menopausal hormone therapy for menopause, and arouse the interest of clinicians involved in this problem.

Purpose. To study the mechanisms and effects of medicinal plants used for the treatment and correction of menopausal syndrome.

Materials and methods. This review article was prepared based on the study of literature and scientific articles in the period from July 2000 to July 2024. We used databases such as RSCI (e-library), PubMed, Medline, Scopus and Magiran.

Results. The mechanisms and pharmacological effects of medicinal plants with phytoestrogen activity used for the treatment and correction of menopausal syndrome are described and studied in detail.

Conclusion. Phytoestrogens are effectively used in the correction and treatment of menopausal syndrome as an alternative to menopausal hormone therapy and can be recommended to doctors of practical healthcare.
